Did you know that toilets use about a quarter of all the water in the average home, and are one of the likeliest places to find leaks?
To check for a toilet leak, put a dye tablet or food coloring into the tank. If color appears in the bowl without flushing, there’s a leak that should be repaired with a replacement rubber flapper or fill mechanism. (Your local utility might offer free tablets.)
Undetected internal leaks from tank to bowl could waste up to 100 gallons a day, according to NRDC. Checking your toilet regularly could be just what’s needed to save water in your household!
