Fly less
By Devin Ruy, Green Change
Air travel is one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Planes burn large amounts of fossil fuels at high altitudes, where their emissions have an even stronger warming effect.
Most of us don’t realize that just one round-trip flight from San Francisco to New York can emit nearly 2 tons of CO₂ per passenger — about 10% of the average American’s annual footprint. Choosing trains, buses, video calls, or carbon offsets instead of flying can dramatically cut your carbon footprint and help cool the planet.
By choosing to fly less, we can make one of the biggest individual impacts on reducing climate pollution.
So what exactly can you do?
Stay Grounded Whenever You Can
These days, a lot of trips can be skipped altogether. Work meetings, conferences, and even family gatherings can often happen over Zoom or FaceTime. It’s easier than ever to connect without packing a bag — and doing so saves time, money, and a big chunk of carbon emissions. Every flight we don’t take makes a real difference for the climate.
Combine trips
If you do need to travel, group multiple purposes for a single trip — such as business meetings, family visits, or vacation — instead of taking several separate flights throughout the year.
And when you travel for leisure, try discovering closer destinations. Many people report that “staycations” or regional road or rail trips feel just as rewarding as international getaways — and create lasting memories with far less carbon cost.
Make “Less Flying” A Long Term Habit
Try starting small:
-
Commit to one fewer flight per year.
-
Replace one international trip with a local adventure.
-
Encourage your company or school to adopt travel guidelines that prioritize low-carbon options.
-
Offset any remaining flights through certified programs.
The more people rethink how often they fly, the faster we can collectively reduce aviation’s impact. By choosing to stay grounded more often — and flying smarter when we do — we can help create a culture of climate-conscious travel that benefits both people and the planet.
